Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Triumph

Published

on

Marc Marquez admitted to imposing self-pressure to achieve an impeccable performance at the Aragon MotoGP event. He mentioned that during the Sprint, he wasn't having a good time because he was aware of the significance of the day.

Marc Marquez brought an end to his nearly three-year stretch without a win by triumphing at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a success he called "perfect" following an excellent weekend.

Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, triumphed in the Sprint race decisively, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.

Marquez did not record a lap time in the Warm Up, which was wet due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, making it the only session he did not lead.

"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez mentioned at the press conference following the race. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with my team to remain in the garage."

Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had built up during the nearly three-year period without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.

"We felt incredible right from the start of the race," he commented. "The race was extremely long, and managing our emotions in those final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I'd lost 3-4 kilograms."

"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each passing step, securing this victory felt unbelievable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we had undertaken, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."

"They provided me with significant support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I came in as a newcomer, aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals, and we're continuing to advance."

Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts in the closing laps.

"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about finishing on the podium," he mentioned. "But more than that, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's constantly a celebration around them."

"Besides that, the most important factor was the support of those around me. In extremely challenging moments, having a compassionate and kind team who were more affected by my struggles than I was truly made a significant difference."

"The celebration felt unusual because, unlike other races where the adrenaline was much higher even for second or third place finishes, today was more about emotion than adrenaline."

After dominating all the sessions except for the rain-soaked Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to cap off his weekend with a Grand Prix win.

“I felt the need to push myself today,” he remarked. “As you noticed during the Sprint yesterday, I wasn’t having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me.

"For that reason, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you're fast, it seems like you can handle everything, stay consistent, and appear intelligent; but in reality, you're the same person. It's just that without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."

"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading contenders."

Having secured the win, Marquez regards this victory with the same significance as his 2021 German Grand Prix success, which marked his first triumph following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.

Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."

"When there are numerous injuries and you're going through a tough time, the significance of each victory changes."

"Although I have won 60 times, those two wins, along with my first MotoGP victory, stand out as the most significant. They provide a unique boost in confidence that is truly special."

"I hadn't felt well for a long period, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but I was also highly focused to avoid any errors."

Despite this being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.

During the Valencia test, Marquez came to the conclusion that a race victory is on the horizon. He acknowledged that they will have their chances. However, he noted that competing for the championship requires continued effort and dedication.

"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
