Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Victory, Reflects on Emotional Journey
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He mentioned that during the Sprint, he wasn't having fun because he understood the significance of the day.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by securing victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with an 0.8-second lead, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez did not record a lap time during the Warm Up, which was the only session he didn't lead, as the track was wet from rain that had fallen overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez mentioned during the post-race press conference. "We were ahead in every session except the Warm Up, where, to be honest, I chose with my team to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th premier class victory.
"We had an incredible sensation right from the start of the race," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to manage my emotions during the final laps. However, when I crossed the finish line, it felt like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing burden on my back with each step, winning this was truly amazing. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we went through, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance to me, with the Gresini team offering me a crucial opportunity. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to push forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various matters in the closing laps.
“The final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium,” he mentioned. “Beyond the podium, the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; there's always a celebratory atmosphere around them.”
In addition to that, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. When you're in a tough spot, in a profoundly challenging situation, having a genuinely compassionate team—people who are more affected by your struggles than you are—makes all the difference.
"The celebration felt unusual because there was more adrenaline in other races where I finished second or third than there was today. Today’s feeling was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marquez confessed that he experienced a bit of pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix, especially after leading all sessions except for the rain-affected Warm Up on Sunday morning.
"I felt the need to push myself today," he explained. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of how crucial today would be and recognized the significant chance I had."
"In light of that, I made an effort to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it seems like you can handle things well—you remain steady and make smart decisions. However, without that speed, managing the situation becomes incredibly challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading racers."
After securing this win, Marquez places it on par with his victory at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany," Marquez stated.
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and facing a tough period, the significance of wins changes."
"I have indeed won 60 times, but those two victories, along with my first win in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that additional assurance."
"I hadn’t felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but remained very focused to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had realized winning was achievable ever since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez came to the conclusion that a race victory was imminent. He noted that the team would have its chances to succeed. However, he emphasized that contending for the championship would require continued hard work.
“However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come.”
