An elated Marc Marquez secures his inaugural Sprint win – marking his first triumph in MotoGP since 2021 – with an impressive performance before his local supporters at Aragon.
Jorge Martin's runner-up finish propelled him to the forefront of the championship standings, as Pramac Ducati's racer benefited from a disappointing performance by the current titleholder, Francesco Bagnaia.
Dominating in both practice and qualifying sessions, Marquez secured the pole position with a significant lead of 0.8 seconds ahead of Pedro Acosta and Bagnaia, quickly pulling away from the pack.
The lead of the star from Gresini reached nearly four seconds at its highest point during the 11-lap race.
However, since Sprints do not qualify as an official win, Marquez is now aiming for his much-anticipated 60th MotoGP victory this Sunday.
Kicking off from the less favorable side of the track, among them Bagnaia, who had a sluggish start, Martin, who began from the second row, managed to wedge himself between Marquez and Acosta.
Bagnaia climbed from sixth to fourth position, but after going off track, he ended up falling back behind Alex Marquez and Miguel Oliveira.
The current two-time world champion was on the back foot, falling behind Brad Binder, his teammate Enea Bastianini, and the Yamaha ridden by the spirited Fabio Quartararo.
Bagnaia signaled to his Michelin engineer while entering the Ducati pits following the race.
Aleix Espargaro encountered difficulties right from the start, later colliding with Fabio di Giannantonio's rear at the first turn, leading to a crash. Johann Zarco and Franco Morbidelli also did not finish the race, accompanying the Aprilia competitor in exiting early.
Every participant opted for an identical tire setup, selecting medium for the front and soft for the rear
The Aragon track, where a MotoGP race was last held in 2022, has undergone a full resurfacing in preparation for its comeback this year.
Michelin has increased the rear tyre allocation for this weekend from two to three, owing to insufficient data on the new MotoGP track surface.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 stipulate that competitors are required to maintain a minimum pressure of 1.8 bar in the front tyres—down from the previous 1.88 bar—for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, an increase from the former requirement of 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint event's duration.
Failing to achieve this minimum requirement in a Grand Prix will result in a penalty of 16 seconds added to the post-race time, or an 8-second penalty in the case of a Sprint or shorter race.
