Marc Marquez Breaks Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on myself" to achieve a "perfect" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He revealed that during the Sprint race, he wasn't having fun because he understood the significance of the day's events.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, celebrating a triumph he called "perfect".
Marquez led all the practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
During the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as ideal. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose to remain in the pit with the team," he explained.
Marquez discussed the intense emotions he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he commented. "The race was extremely long, and managing our emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line felt like I shed 3–4kg."
"With each passing step, the weight on my back grew heavier. Winning this was unbelievable, and right away, I began reflecting on the entire journey, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team in particular offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We have set new goals and will continue to strive for them."
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to ponder various thoughts in the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he stated. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always amusing and joyful; it's always like a party there."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. When you find yourself in a challenging and intense situation, having a compassionate and supportive team, who experience the struggle even more deeply than you do, truly makes a difference.
The celebration felt unusual because there had been more adrenaline in other races, even when finishing in second or third place. Today’s experience was more about emotion than adrenaline.
Marquez, who led in every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, confessed that he felt some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
“I felt the need to push myself today,” he commented. “Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today's event and recognized that I had a major opportunity ahead.”
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you possess the necessary speed, it seems like you can handle things well, maintain consistency, and act wisely; but fundamentally, you remain unchanged. Without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading racers."
Marquez sees this victory as comparable to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which was significant as it marked his first triumph since suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I regard it as being on the same level as Germany in 2021."
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win feels different."
"Indeed, I've secured 60 wins, but the two most recent victories, along with my debut win in MotoGP, hold the greatest significance for me because they boost my confidence in a unique manner and provide that additional assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just going through the motions; it felt effortless. However, I was particularly focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite being his 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, Marquez revealed that he had believed winning was achievable since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez mentioned that he understood a race victory was on the horizon. He noted that they would have their chances. However, he emphasized that contending for the championship is different and requires continued effort.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it was only a matter of time before it happened."
