Marc Marquez Breaks Victory Drought with Dominant Performance in Aragon MotoGP: A ‘Perfect’ Weekend to Remember
Marc Marquez admitted to placing a lot of pressure on himself to achieve a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He revealed that during the Sprint race, he wasn't having fun because he understood the significance of the day.
Marc Marquez broke his near three-year spell without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, celebrating what he called a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led in all three practice rounds, secured the pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, which remained damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, was the only instance where Marquez did not lead, as he did not record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez mentioned during the post-race press conference. “We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I honestly chose along with the team to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
“We felt incredible right from the start of the race,” he remarked. “It was an extremely lengthy race, and managing my emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line made me feel as if I had shed 3–4kg.”
"Due to the increasing burden on my back, achieving this victory felt amazing. Instantly, my mind went to the entire journey we went through, considering everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and I am particularly grateful to the Gresini team for the opportunity they offered me. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my best effort, and we succeeded. We have set new goals and will continue to strive towards them."
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, giving him the luxury to ponder over various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about standing on the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always amusing and joyful; it's always a celebration with them."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the support from those around me. In times of extreme hardship, being surrounded by genuinely compassionate individuals who shared in my struggles made all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual compared to other races where the excitement was much higher, even for finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about feeling emotional than experiencing an adrenaline rush."
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to cap off his weekend with a Grand Prix win after leading all sessions except for the rain-affected Warm Up on Sunday morning.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he mentioned. "If you noticed during the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I understood that today was crucial and I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay concentrated. When you're fast, it seems like you can handle things well, stay steady, and make smart choices; but you're the same person. If you lack speed, managing the situation becomes incredibly tough."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez views this victory as comparable to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his initial triumph since he fractured his arm during the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on par with the 2021 race in Germany."
“When a team is dealing with numerous injuries and is in a challenging period, the significance of their wins changes.”
Indeed, I did secure 60 wins, but those two particular triumphs, along with my initial victory in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They instill a unique sense of assurance and provide an additional boost of confidence.
"For a while, I haven't felt well, and this weekend's laps were brief. I was simply riding along, it felt smooth and effortless, but I made sure to stay very focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he revealed that he had believed in a win ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez came to the conclusion that a race victory is inevitable. He noted, "I understood that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship requires continuous effort, which is something we must maintain."
"However, in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually happen."
