Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Win Drought with ‘Perfect’ Performance at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted to feeling self-induced pressure to achieve a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He mentioned that during the Sprint race, he couldn't fully enjoy himself as he was aware of the day's significance.
After nearly three years without a win, Marc Marquez broke his losing streak at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling the event "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice rounds, secured the pole position with a 0.8-second lead, claimed a decisive victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez did not record a lap time during the Warm Up session, which was the only part affected by the wet conditions following rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Marquez described the weekend as ideal during the press conference after the race. He mentioned that they dominated every session, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
He expressed that they had an incredible sensation right from the start of the race. He mentioned that it was an extremely lengthy race and managing his emotions during the final laps was challenging. However, upon crossing the finish line, he felt as if he had lost 3-4 kg.
"Due to the increasing weight on my back, achieving this victory was an amazing feat. Instantly, I began reflecting on the entire journey, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"The support I received was tremendous, particularly from the Gresini team, who provided me with a key opportunity. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to strive forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him moments to reflect in the closing laps.
"During the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But more than that, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and joyful, it's always a celebration with them."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging and tough times, having a compassionate team who are genuinely kind and empathetic, and who feel the hardships even more intensely than I do, made all the difference."
"It was an unusual celebration because the excitement was greater in other races — celebrating second or third places — than it was today, which was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading all the sessions except the rain-soaked Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
“I felt a lot of pressure today,” he stated. “You could see in the Sprint yesterday that I wasn’t having fun because I understood that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me.
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle the situation well, maintain consistency, and act smartly. However, without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the leading racers."
After securing the win, Marquez ranks this victory with his 2021 German Grand Prix success, which marked his first triumph following the arm injury he suffered at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany," Marquez stated.
"When facing numerous injuries and a challenging period, the worth of the victories changes."
"While I have secured 60 wins overall, those two particular victories, along with my initial win in MotoGP, stand out as the most crucial. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an additional sense of assurance."
"For quite a while, I hadn't been feeling well, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding along effortlessly, feeling a sense of flow, but I was highly focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was feasible ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, I understood that a race victory is within reach,” stated Marquez. “It was there that I recognized we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter; for that, we must continue our efforts.
“However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come.”
