Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Performance at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted to feeling self-imposed pressure to achieve an ideal performance during the Aragon MotoGP event. Reflecting on the Sprint race, he acknowledged that he wasn't having fun because he recognized the significance of the day's results.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by clinching victory at last weekend’s Aragon MotoGP, a race he called "perfect" after an exceptional weekend.
Marquez led all three practice rounds, secured the pole position with an 0.8-second advantage, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin in Sunday's Grand Prix.
The only session that Marc Marquez didn’t lead was the Warm Up, which remained wet after rain overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning, and where he didn’t record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez mentioned during the press conference after the race. “We were ahead in every session, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with my team to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-class victory.
"In the race, we had an incredible sensation right from the start," he remarked. "The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to manage my emotions in the final laps, but when I crossed the finish line, it felt as if I had shed 3–4 kilograms."
"With each step, the weight on my back grew heavier, making this victory feel truly unbelievable. As soon as I won, my thoughts shifted to the journey we went through, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and are continuing to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various matters in the closing laps.
"In the last three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "But more than the podium, the Gresini garage is really amusing and full of joy; it always feels like a party there."
"Besides that, the initial factor was the individuals surrounding me. In challenging circumstances, when you're in a deeply tough spot, having a compassionate team of genuinely kind people who are hurting more than I am made all the difference."
“The celebration felt unusual because, in previous races, the excitement was greater even when securing second or third places. Today, it was more about feeling emotional than experiencing a rush of adrenaline.”
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to secure a Grand Prix victory after leading every session except the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he mentioned. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of how crucial today would be and I recognized the significant chance I had."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay concentrated. When you possess the speed, it seems like you can handle the circumstances, remain steady, and act wisely; but you are essentially the same person. Without the speed, however, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the leading drivers."
Having secured victory, Marquez views this win as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix success, which marked his first triumph following an arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
“I consider this achievement to be on par with what I accomplished in Germany in 2021,” Marquez stated.
"When facing numerous injuries during a challenging period, the significance of each win holds a different weight."
Indeed, I have won 60 races, but those two wins, along with my first victory in MotoGP, are the most significant because they boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an additional level of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding along; it felt effortless and smooth, but I was particularly focused on avoiding any errors."
Even though this marked Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed a win was achievable ever since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory was imminent. He recognized that opportunities would present themselves, but emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would inevitably happen at some point."
