Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted to imposing high expectations on himself to achieve an impeccable performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. "During the Sprint, I didn't have much fun because I was aware of the significance of today's race," he explained.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win by clinching victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a triumph he referred to as "perfect" after an ideal weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured the pole position with a lead of 0.8 seconds, triumphed decisively in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session not led by Marquez was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain that fell overnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
"It was an amazing weekend," Marquez remarked during the press conference following the race. "We dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with my team to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated during nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to claim his 60th victory in the top class.
"We felt incredible right from the start of the race," he mentioned. "It was a very lengthy race, and it was tough to keep my emotions in check during the final laps. However, crossing the finish line made me feel as though I had shed 3–4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each passing step, winning this was unbelievable. I instantly began reflecting on the entire journey, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Márquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team offering me a crucial opportunity. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and are moving forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate other matters in the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "Beyond the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always amusing and joyful, it's constantly like a celebration there."
"Additionally, the primary factor was the individuals surrounding me. In extremely challenging circumstances, when you're in a tough spot, having a compassionate and supportive team who are more affected than I am truly made a significant impact."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since past races had more intense adrenaline rushes, even for second and third place finishes. Today's event was driven more by emotion than by adrenaline."
After leading all the sessions except for the rainy Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I felt a lot of self-imposed pressure," he mentioned. "As you observed during the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. When you have the speed, it appears that you can handle the situation, stay consistent, and act wisely; but in reality, you're the same person. Without the speed, it becomes extremely challenging to manage things."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to get closer to the leaders."
Marquez views this win as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his first triumph following his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it on par with the race in Germany in 2021," Marquez commented.
"When a team faces numerous injuries, achieving victories in such challenging times holds greater significance."
"I did achieve 60 wins, but those two triumphs, along with my initial MotoGP victory, stand out as the most significant. They provided a unique boost in confidence, offering an extra sense of assurance."
“I had not felt well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was merely riding; it felt effortless as I went with the flow, but I was particularly focused on avoiding any errors.”
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he revealed that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
“I understood during the Valencia test that a race victory is imminent,” remarked Marquez. “At that moment, I knew we would have our chances. Competing for the championship is a different matter; we must continue to put in the effort to reach that goal.”
“However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come.”
