Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with Perfect Performance at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted that he "challenged himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP event. "During the Sprint race, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was a crucial day," he explained.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice rounds, secured pole position with an 0.8-second lead, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which remained damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, and he did not record a lap time during this period.
During the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as ideal. He mentioned that they were ahead in all the sessions except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated during the nearly three years he hadn't won a race, and the sense of relief he experienced as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"We had an incredible sensation right from the start of the race," he remarked. "It was an extremely lengthy race, and managing emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kilograms."
“Due to my back becoming increasingly burdened with each step, winning this was an amazing feat. Right away, I began reflecting on all the efforts we put in, the support from everyone around me, and my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez.
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me the chance. I came in as a novice rider, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals now and continue to push forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him the luxury of contemplation in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and joyful place, it's constantly like a celebration there."
"Beyond that, the initial factor was the individuals surrounding me. In extremely challenging circumstances, when you find yourself in a very tough spot, having a compassionate and supportive team—people who are more affected by the situation than I am—made all the difference."
"It was an unusual kind of celebration; in other races, the excitement was greater even when securing second or third place. Today, it was more about feeling emotional rather than an adrenaline rush."
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix victory, especially after leading in every session except the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"I felt the need to push myself today," he stated. "If you noticed during the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it appears that you can handle the circumstances well, show consistency, and demonstrate intelligence; however, you remain the same person. Without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading racers."
Marquez views this victory as being on par with his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph since suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you face numerous injuries and are in a challenging period, the significance of your wins changes."
"Indeed, I have won 60 races, but those two victories, along with my first win in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that extra assurance."
"I hadn’t felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding; it felt effortless and smooth, but I was especially focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite being in his 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, Marquez revealed that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the end of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez stated, "I understood that a race victory is on the horizon. It was clear to me then that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter, and we must continue our efforts for that goal."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
