Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend: ‘I Put Pressure on Myself to Win
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He confessed, "I didn't enjoy the Sprint because I was aware of the significance of today's race."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling it a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second margin, triumphed in the Sprint race convincingly, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez didn't record a lap time in the Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, making it the only session he didn't lead.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez mentioned during the press conference after the race. “We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with the team to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
"We had an incredible sensation right from the start of the race," he expressed. "The race was extremely long, and managing emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line made me feel as though I had shed 3–4 kg."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was remarkable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we had undertaken, the support from everyone around me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, particularly the Gresini team, which offered me a chance. I came in as a novice rider, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already picturing myself on the podium," he remarked. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's always a celebration there."
"Besides that, the primary factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging times, when you find yourself in a profoundly tough spot, having a truly compassionate team—people who are enduring even more than I am—was what made all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since the excitement was greater during other races where we finished second or third; today’s event was more about feeling emotion rather than adrenaline."
Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to secure a Grand Prix victory after leading every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"Today, I really pushed myself," he stated. "You could tell from the Sprint yesterday that I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial, and I recognized that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay concentrated. When you possess the speed, it appears as though you can handle the situation well, showing consistency and intelligence; however, you're essentially the same person. It's just that without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let’s aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the top contenders."
After securing a win, Marquez views it as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his comeback after fracturing his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When there are numerous injuries and you're in a tough situation, the significance of winning changes."
Although I have achieved 60 wins, those two victories, along with my first one in MotoGP, hold the most significance. They provide a unique boost in confidence that sets them apart from the rest.
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone, but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is on the horizon. He understood that they would have their chances. However, competing for the championship is a different matter, and for that, they must continue their efforts.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
