Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Victory
Marc Marquez admitted he "put pressure on himself" to have a "perfect" weekend at the Aragon MotoGP. He mentioned that during the Sprint race, he didn’t find it enjoyable because he recognized the significance of the day.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win last weekend by triumphing in the Aragon MotoGP, a race he later called "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with an 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez did not clock a lap time during the Warm Up, which was damp from rain that fell overnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning. This was the only session he did not lead.
Marquez described the weekend as ideal during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez expressed the emotional tension he had felt during the nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the competition, we felt fantastic right from the start," he stated. "The race was incredibly long, and managing emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each passing step, winning this was unbelievable. Instantly, my thoughts turned to the journey we undertook, the supportive people surrounding me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. Now, we set new goals and continue to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "But beyond the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is really amusing and joyful; it's always a celebration there."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging times, being surrounded by a compassionate and caring team, who seemed to be more affected by my struggles than I was, made all the difference."
"It was an unusual celebration since the excitement felt stronger in other races, even when finishing in second or third place, compared to today, which was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
"Today, I felt a lot of self-imposed pressure," he remarked. "As you could tell from the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay focused. When you're fast, it seems easier to handle things—you appear consistent and smart. But you're the same person, and without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading racers."
Marquez views this win as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his comeback after suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany," remarked Marquez.
"When facing numerous injuries and tough times, the significance of each win changes."
"Although I have 60 wins, those two victories, along with my first MotoGP win, hold the greatest significance because they boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an extra sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding smoothly, maintaining an easy flow, but I was particularly focused on avoiding any errors."
Even though this marked Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he revealed that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez noted, "I understood that a race victory is on the horizon. At that moment, I saw that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship, however, is another matter entirely; we need to continue putting in the effort for that goal."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would inevitably happen."
