Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Victory: ‘I Put Pressure on Myself’
Marc Marquez admitted to feeling self-imposed pressure to achieve a flawless performance at the Aragon MotoGP event.
"I didn't find the Sprint enjoyable because I was aware of the significance of today's race," he stated.
Marc Marquez broke a nearly three-year winless streak with his triumph at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he labeled as "perfect."
Marquez led the timing charts in all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, achieved a commanding victory in the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session not led by Marquez was the Warm Up, which was damp from rain that fell overnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez mentioned during the post-race press briefing. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with the team to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced as he crossed the finish line to claim his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he remarked. "It was an extremely long race, and managing emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line felt like I shed 3–4kg."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back, achieving this victory felt astonishing. Right away, I began reflecting on the entire journey, thinking about everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team particularly offering me a chance. As a new rider, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and continue to push forward."
Throughout the race, Marquez established a significant lead, allowing him to reflect on various matters during the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he remarked. "But more than the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it always feels like a celebration there."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the support from those around me. In challenging and intense circumstances, having a compassionate team that cares deeply and shares in the struggle made all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual because, in other races, the adrenaline was much higher — whether it was for securing second or third place — whereas today, it was driven more by emotion than adrenaline."
After leading every session except the rain-affected Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix to cap off his weekend.
"I felt the need to push myself today," he explained. "If you noticed during the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I realized how crucial today was and understood that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. If you have the pace, it appears that you can handle the circumstances, remain steady, and act wisely. However, if you lack the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and strive to keep up with the leading competitors."
Marquez views this win as comparable to his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his comeback after fracturing his arm during the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on par with my performance in Germany in 2021."
"When facing numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of each win increases."
"I've won 60 races, but the two victories I mentioned, along with my first MotoGP win, hold the most significance. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that additional assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a long time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he revealed that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez understood that a race victory was within reach. He recognized that opportunities to win would come. However, he also noted that contending for the championship requires continued effort and hard work.
"However, in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
