Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Triumph
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I didn't find joy in the Sprint because I was aware of the significance of today's race."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year winless streak last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, calling the weekend "perfect" after securing the victory.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured the pole position with a 0.8-second lead, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was affected by rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He explained that they dominated every session, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the box.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he experienced during the nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-class victory.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and managing emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each step, winning felt almost unbelievable. Instantly, my mind was flooded with thoughts of the entire journey we had undertaken, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, particularly the Gresini team, which offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. Now, we set new goals and continue to move forward."
Marquez developed a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various matters in the closing laps.
“In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium,” he stated. “But more than the podium, I was thinking about the Gresini garage. It’s always such a lively and joyful place, full of celebration.”
"Additionally, the key factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging times, when you find yourself in a tough spot, having a compassionate and genuinely kind team—people who care deeply and perhaps suffer even more than you—makes all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual since other races had more adrenaline, even when finishing in second or third place. Today was driven more by emotion than by adrenaline."
After leading in every session except the rain-soaked Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he explained. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I made an effort to stay concentrated. When you have the speed, everything seems manageable, you appear consistent and smart; but fundamentally, you're the same person. Without the speed, handling the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the top contenders."
Marquez sees this victory as equally significant to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez commented, "I consider it to be on par with my performance in Germany in 2021."
"When facing numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win becomes greater."
"While I did win 60 times, those two victories, along with my first one in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an extra layer of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a long time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding effortlessly, staying focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez expressed confidence that a race victory is imminent. He acknowledged that they will have their chances, but emphasized that competing for the championship will require continued effort and dedication.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would come eventually."
