Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Triumph: ‘It Felt Like I Lost 3-4kg
Marc Marquez admitted he "put pressure on myself" to achieve a flawless performance at the Aragon MotoGP. "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was a crucial day," he explained.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing at last weekend's Aragon MotoGP, a success he called a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, clinched pole position with a lead of 0.8 seconds, triumphed in the Sprint race decisively, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, was the only one Marquez didn't lead, as he didn't record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez stated during the post-race press conference. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with the team to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he experienced during nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the top-tier category.
"In the race, we experienced an incredible sensation from the start," he remarked. "The race was exceptionally long, and it was challenging to keep emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line made me feel as though I had shed 3–4kg."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. Right away, I began reflecting on everything we went through, all the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue to strive forward."
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts during the last laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "Actually, it was more than just the podium; the Gresini garage is always a lively and joyful place, like a constant celebration."
"Another crucial factor was the support of the people around me. In times of extreme difficulty, having a compassionate and empathetic team, who were perhaps even more affected by the situation than I was, truly made a significant impact."
“It was an unusual celebration; in past races, the excitement was higher even when finishing second or third. Today’s emotions were different, more heartfelt than adrenaline-fueled.”
After leading in every session except the rain-affected Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he remarked. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I made an effort to stay focused. When you have speed, everything seems more manageable – you appear consistent and smart. However, without speed, handling the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading racers."
Marquez sees this victory as comparable to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph following a severe arm injury sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as 2021 in Germany."
"When faced with numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of victories changes."
While I have won 60 times, those two victories, along with my first win in MotoGP, hold the most significance. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that extra assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just riding effortlessly, maintaining a smooth flow, but I stayed highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the conclusion of 2023.
"During the Valencia test, I understood that a race victory is within reach," Marquez stated. "I realized that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter, and for that, we must continue our efforts."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it was only a matter of time before it would happen."
