Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with Dominant ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez “put a lot of expectations on myself” to have an “ideal” MotoGP weekend in Aragon.
“I didn’t have fun during the Sprint because I was aware of the significance of today.”
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win by triumphing at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, an event he called "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice rounds, secured the pole position with an 0.8-second advantage, triumphed in the Sprint with authority, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez didn't lead the Warm Up session, which was dampened by rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, since he didn't record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez mentioned during the post-race press conference. “We led all the sessions, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with the team to remain in the box.”
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt fantastic right from the start," he remarked. "The race was incredibly long, making it tough to manage emotions in the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kilograms."
"With each step, the weight on my back grew heavier, so winning this was extraordinary. Instantly, I began reflecting on the entire journey, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and are continuing to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him time to reflect during the last few laps.
“In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium,” he mentioned. “Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and joyful, like a constant celebration.”
In addition to that, the primary factor was the individuals surrounding me. When you find yourself in an extremely challenging or dire situation, having a compassionate and supportive team—people who are even more affected by your struggles than you are—truly makes a difference.
"The celebration felt unusual because, compared to other races where the excitement of finishing in second or third place was greater, today was more about feeling emotional rather than an adrenaline rush."
Marquez confessed that he experienced some pressure to secure a victory in the Grand Prix, having led every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he stated. "Like you saw in the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having fun because I realized that today was crucial and I had a significant chance to seize."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you possess the speed, it appears that you can handle the circumstances, maintain consistency, and make intelligent decisions; however, you remain the same person, and without the speed, it's extremely challenging to navigate the situation."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the leaders."
Having secured the win, Marquez places it on the same level as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his comeback after suffering a broken arm during the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez commented, “I consider it to be on par with the 2021 event in Germany.”
"When faced with numerous injuries, the significance of each win changes."
"Indeed, I've won 60 races, but those two wins, along with my first victory in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence uniquely and provide that additional assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a long period, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding; it felt effortless and smooth, but I was particularly focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed a win was attainable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez mentioned that he became confident a race victory is on the horizon. He understood that opportunities would come their way. However, he noted that competing for the championship is another matter entirely, requiring continued effort and hard work.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that eventually it would come."
