Marc Marquez Breaks Nearly Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Performance at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted that he felt he needed to push himself to achieve an ideal outcome during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He revealed that during the Sprint race, he couldn't find joy in the experience since he was aware of the significance of the day's events.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by claiming victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling the weekend "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured the pole position with a 0.8-second lead, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint race, and finished five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin in Sunday's Grand Prix.
The only session not dominated by Marquez was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain that fell overnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez stated during the press conference held after the race. "We were ahead in every session, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose to remain in the garage with the team."
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he finally crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
“In the competition, we felt incredible right from the start,” he shared. “The race was extremely lengthy, and managing emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like I had shed 3-4 kilograms.”
"With each step, my back felt progressively heavier, making this victory feel extraordinary. Instantly, my mind filled with thoughts of the entire journey we undertook, the support from everyone surrounding me, and the love from my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a crucial opportunity. I came in as a novice rider, aimed to give my best effort, and we succeeded. We have set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate matters during the last few laps.
“The last three laps, I was already thinking about the podium,” he mentioned. “Even more than the podium, the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it’s like a constant celebration there.”
"The primary factor was the support from those around me. During extremely challenging times, being surrounded by genuinely compassionate people who endure even more than I do can make all the difference."
"It was an unusual celebration because, in other races, the adrenaline was higher when celebrating second or third places than it was today. Today’s feeling was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading all sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he was under some pressure to cap off his weekend with a Grand Prix victory.
"I was feeling the weight of expectations today," he remarked. "If you noticed during yesterday's Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of how crucial today was and recognized that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it seems like you can handle the circumstances, maintain consistency, and act wisely; however, you remain the same person, and without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
“Let’s aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and get closer to the frontrunners.”
Marquez views this victory as equally significant to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his comeback after fracturing his arm during the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you face numerous injuries and tough times, the significance of your wins changes."
"While it's accurate that I've achieved 60 wins, those two particular victories, along with my initial win in MotoGP, hold the most significance. They provide a unique boost in confidence and offer an additional sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding effortlessly, maintaining a smooth flow, but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable since he first tested the Desmosedici in Valencia at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory was on the horizon. He understood that they would have their chances. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, while I was in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
