Marc Marquez Breaks Nearly Three-Year Victory Drought with Dominant Performance at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted that he "pushed himself" to achieve an "ideal" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. Reflecting on the Sprint race, he confessed, "I wasn't having fun because I realized how crucial today was."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect".
Marquez led the way in all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session not led by Marquez was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as ideal during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over the nearly three years he spent without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he stated. "The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to manage our emotions in the final laps, but when I crossed the finish line, it felt like I had lost 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this was amazing. I instantly thought about everything we went through, and all the people who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team particularly offering me the chance. I came in as a newcomer, put in my maximum effort, and we achieved our goal. Now, we set new objectives and continue moving forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to ponder various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But more than the podium, the Gresini garage is always amusing and cheerful; it's constantly a celebration in there."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the support of those around me. In extremely challenging and profound situations, having a compassionate and empathetic team, who felt my struggles even more deeply than I did, truly made a difference."
“The celebration felt unusual because, in other races, the adrenaline rush was stronger even when finishing in second or third place. Today was more about emotion than adrenaline.”
After leading every session except for the wet Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he was under some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of self-imposed pressure today," he mentioned. "You could see from my performance in the Sprint yesterday that I wasn't having a good time. I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you have the necessary speed, it seems like you can handle things well, stay consistent, and make smart decisions. However, without that speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading contenders."
Having secured victory, Marquez regards this win along with his 2021 German Grand Prix success, which marked his first triumph following an arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it on the same level as my performance in Germany in 2021."
“When a team is dealing with numerous injuries and facing a challenging period, the significance of their wins becomes greater.”
"I indeed secured 60 wins, but those two triumphs, along with my inaugural MotoGP victory, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique manner, providing an added sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone, but I was particularly focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite being in his 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, Marquez revealed that he believed a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is imminent. He recognized that they will have their chances. However, he noted that contending for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, it was in Valencia where I began to realize that it would inevitably come to pass."
