Marc Marquez Breaks 1042-Day Winless Streak with First Ducati Sprint Victory at Aragon
Marc Marquez reflects on his initial Ducati triumph, breaking a lengthy winless streak in Aragon. The rider's nearly three-year drought concluded with a victory in the Aragon Sprint, though he notes that "the most important day is tomorrow."
Marc Marquez made a triumphant return to the winner's circle in MotoGP on Saturday at Aragon, claiming victory in the Sprint race after being away for 1042 days.
This marked the 60th instance he achieved this as a MotoGP competitor, although it won't be recorded as an official win.
This victory marked his debut triumph in the new Sprint format that was launched at the beginning of last season, as well as his first win riding a Ducati.
"I'm extremely pleased," stated the eight-time world champion. "It's hard to fully smile and savor the moment because we understand that the most crucial day is tomorrow."
The athlete expressed that while it was just a Sprint race, their team viewed it as an important milestone in their development and growth. He shared his happiness, particularly for his entire team.
Marquez has had a perfect weekend up to this point, leading all sessions and securing pole position by an astonishing 0.8 seconds, which Francesco Bagnaia described as "unbelievable."
Despite some nervous moments on the first lap due to the slippery and low-traction conditions, Marquez managed to stay in front and maintain his lead throughout the entire Sprint race.
"In the initial lap, I made an error at the first corner, causing a significant front wheel lockup. Additionally, I failed to properly deactivate the rear device, which affected my performance throughout the uphill section," he disclosed.
"I stayed composed, but I made another error at turn 12. At that point, I thought, 'Alright, it's important to figure out this track,' and by the second lap, my performance began to improve."
"It seems that due to the [dirty] state of the track, it's hard to get the tires up to temperature initially. However, once I discovered the right lines and regained the same feeling I had during practice, I aimed to avoid overdoing it."
Marquez's victory marked the first time a GP23 rider has won this season.
The Spanish rider has stated that he doesn't feel stressed about ending his several-year MotoGP winless streak, as he will have many chances to do so next year as a factory Ducati rider.
Despite everything, he enters Sunday's race as the clear frontrunner.
He mentioned that the goal for tomorrow is to have a strong start and take the lead right from the first lap. He added that he anticipates Martin and Pecco will be closer to him if the track conditions improve.
"However, we will make an effort to handle everything."
Marquez is still in fourth place in the world championship standings, but he has narrowed the gap to just 13 points behind Enea Bastianini.
