Lorenzo Confident in Marquez’s Comeback: Injuries a Hurdle, Not a Full Stop to Future MotoGP Titles
Jorge Lorenzo believes that despite Marc Marquez's injury challenges, he is far from done with winning MotoGP championships. "Marc Marquez is not finished claiming titles," he affirms.
Triple MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo feels that injuries continue to hamper Marc Marquez, yet he remains confident that Marquez will secure another championship.
Marquez experienced a severe fracture in his right arm due to an accident during the first race of the 2020 season, resulting in his absence from the entire season's competitions.
Between 2020 and 2022, he underwent a series of four significant surgeries on his arm to address the injury, and has fully recovered since then.
Nonetheless, Lorenzo, who partnered with Marquez at Honda during the 2019 season, is of the opinion that a lingering injury is hampering him, which explains his lack of victories on the Gresini Ducati so far.
Despite this observation, Lorenzo is convinced that Marquez has not yet clinched his final championship.
"Lorenzo mentioned on DAZN, where he serves as an analyst, that he believes the 2020 injury in Jerez is still affecting him physically."
"We've witnessed incredible victors, such as Mick Doohan, secure four world titles despite essentially competing with one and a half legs."
"I believe Marc Marquez has not claimed his final championship, though securing another title will be challenging due to the presence of two younger competitors ahead of him."
"Jorge Martin is now heading to Aprilia, yet he faces a challenge from the younger and incredibly swift Pecco Bagnaia, who is nearly flawless in his performance."
Lorenzo mentioned, "You can notice the impact of the injury on him during certain braking moments.
"Combining all these factors, it results in a scenario where Marc Marquez, despite arguably having the top motorcycle, even if it's not the latest model, is yet to secure a victory."
"Could he have secured a win riding the 2024 motorcycle? Is there a chance he'd be at the forefront of the world championship standings? It's hard to say."
Lorenzo expanded on his hypothesis by highlighting Marquez's dominance before his injury and mentioned that he still anticipates him to contend for the championship this year.
"Lorenzo mentioned, "Before his injury in 2019, he was technically so advanced compared to his competitors that he stood out significantly from the rest."
"Both in terms of its title and in its technical and physical aspects."
Individuals believed in the trifecta principle: top cyclist, equipped with the finest bicycle, would dominate the competition.
"I too predicted his victory in the championship. Although not by a clean sweep, I believed he would secure the title."
"Up to this point, he's yet to secure any wins. Despite battling for victories and achieving podium finishes, victory has eluded him, and this is Marc Marquez we're talking about."
