Liam Lawson Targets 2025 Red Bull F1 Seat: Showdown with Tsunoda as Team Eyes Junior Talent for Verstappen Partnership
Liam Lawson discusses the objectives set by Red Bull as he eyes a potential promotion to Formula 1 in 2025. "The aim or objective remains unchanged from when I joined the program at the age of 17."
Liam Lawson has stated that Red Bull anticipates him to "compete" with Yuki Tsunoda. Both racers are eager to showcase their skills to the top executives as they vie for a potential promotion in the 2025 F1 season.
The question of who will partner with Max Verstappen in 2025 remains unanswered, even though Sergio Perez is signed on for the next season.
In the four weeks that have passed since the Singapore event, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has expressed a strong preference for having a junior driver partner with Verstappen next year.
As Lawson steps in for Daniel Ricciardo in the last six races, Red Bull will have the chance to assess the New Zealander's performance next to Tsunoda.
Should Lawson deliver a strong performance, he might be selected to join Verstappen at Red Bull for the next season.
Despite Yuki Tsunoda's better performance compared to Nyck de Vries and Daniel Ricciardo over the past year and a half, Red Bull has persistently chosen not to promote him.
During a press conference held by the FIA in Austin, Lawson explained what Red Bull anticipates.
When questioned about the possibility of driving for Red Bull next year, he responded by saying that it feels quite distant at the moment.
"Since I joined the program at 17, the objective has remained unchanged."
"The evaluation focuses primarily on performance, and that's essentially the perspective they'll use. Yuki has performed exceptionally well over the past few years, particularly this year. He serves as the standard for comparison since he's the only other driver with the same car as mine."
"I will be measured against him directly. I suppose their aim or expectation for me is to perform on par with him."
"I have no clue about what this means for my position next year or in the future. That's the goal that's been established."
In the immediate future, Lawson aims to assist RB in achieving sixth place in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship, surpassing Haas.
He stated, "It's more complex than just picking a position or declaring where I want to be. The main focus is on earning points for myself, as that is how the team will evaluate my performance."
"The optimal strategy is to earn points. Competing for the sixth position in the championship is also a focus. Fundamentally, my objective is to secure points at the earliest opportunity."
