At the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), Lawson had to begin the race from the back of the grid because of a penalty related to his engine. This situation occurred after he initially secured the 15th position in the sprint qualifying. Notably, he had achieved the third-fastest time during SQ1. In the race, he ultimately finished in 16th place, having competed against two-time world champion Fernando Alonso.
Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, commended him for his impressive performance in his return to the grand prix after more than a year.
Horner shared with reporters in Austin that if you're clashing with Fernando and getting competitive in your first race back, you're performing well.
"In my view, he delivered an outstanding performance in the race today, moving up from 19th to 9th place. He showed great speed and bravery, making it a remarkable recovery for him."
Lawson aims to land a permanent position with RB next year, partnering with Yuki Tsunoda. However, he knows there’s still a chance to contend for a spot on the Red Bull team, replacing Sergio Perez, who is currently not meeting expectations and facing significant pressure.
Helmut Marko, who serves as a motorsport advisor for Red Bull, expressed his admiration by calling Lawson "a promising talent for the future."
"A fantastic first performance," Marko mentioned to Sky Germany. "This was evident right from Q1, where he achieved the third quickest lap."
"He consistently maintained control and executed impressive overtakes. It's important to give young drivers a chance, and when you do, they excel. He is undoubtedly a promising talent for the years ahead."
Lawson expressed that he seized every available opportunity to advance and gain positions. He noted that the team had significantly improved the car's performance the day before, and fortunately, this progress was evident during the race.
