Leclerc Questions Ferrari’s Pace Against McLaren and Red Bull After Challenging Singapore GP
Charles Leclerc expressed uncertainty whether Ferrari could match Lando Norris' speed during the Singapore Grand Prix. He remarked, "I think so, but considering the speed of the McLaren and Max, I'm unsure about the points we lost today."
Charles Leclerc expressed skepticism about Ferrari's chances of contending for a win against Lando Norris at the Singapore Grand Prix, even if their qualifying session had proceeded as expected.
Leclerc ended up in ninth place during qualifying as his fastest lap was invalidated due to a track limits violation.
Despite the deletion, it's improbable that Leclerc would have qualified higher than seventh because he faced grip issues during his last lap.
On the day of the race, Leclerc made a comeback and secured a fifth-place finish, right behind George Russell of Mercedes.
Looking back at the race, Leclerc is uncertain whether victory was achievable at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, no matter his starting position.
Leclerc shared with Adam Cooper from F1 that he would agree, but considering the speed of the McLaren and Max's performance, he's uncertain about the number of points they lost today.
"Regarding George, I'm confident we had the vehicle capable of finishing ahead. Although I haven't reviewed everyone's speed again, based on what I've heard about Lando's performance, I doubt we matched his pace. I'm also uncertain about the positions of the others trailing him."
"A few points were lost. However, I believe it was a solid recovery today. Once again, we faced the consequences of a poor qualifying session. Mistakes happen on Saturdays, but there will also be times when I perform well in qualifying. Unfortunately, today was a case of dealing with the aftermath of a subpar Saturday."
Charles Leclerc's hopes for a podium finish took a major hit due to the actions of Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso early in the race.
After the Monegasque driver was given the opportunity to go all out, he demonstrated impressive speed.
Despite expressing some irritation over the team radio, Leclerc found the battle through the field to be enjoyable.
"Yes, I enjoyed it," he stated. "From the conclusion of the first segment to the final laps, I had a great time. The initial 25 laps were terrible, as I felt like an easy target behind Fernando and Nico."
"I was really hoping they would need to make a pit stop soon because of the cars behind them, but that didn't happen. They kept going for a long time, and I just had to be patient and wait."
"But on the whole, the race has been positive since that point. Once they made their pit stop, we capitalized on our opportunities to earn points. We did suffer slightly due to a poor qualifying session the previous day."
