Last-Minute MotoGP Opportunities: Which Moto2 Riders Could Still Make the Jump in 2025?
Which Moto2 competitors still have a chance to secure a MotoGP seat for next year? Skilled riders from the Moto2 category are contenders for a spot in the 2025 MotoGP lineup.
Multiple Moto2 racers are still in contention for the eight open MotoGP spots available for the upcoming season.
The roster of riders for the 2025 MotoGP season is nearly finalized, though a few important choices remain unresolved.
These skilled Moto2 riders might be selected over their more seasoned counterparts…
Sergio Garcia, who is presently leading the Moto2 championship, has been suggested as a potential candidate for Pramac Yamaha.
At 21 years old, he placed 15th in his debut Moto2 season last year. However, this year, he has truly excelled.
Fabio Quartararo commented on Yamaha’s new satellite team, stating, "In Moto2, I believe [Sergio] Garcia and [Alonso] Lopez are riders who are really quick."
"In my opinion, they have the potential to secure a spot on a team such as Pramac, which ultimately won't just function as a satellite team but rather as an extension of a factory team."
Despite being at the forefront during the summer break, Garcia has not been as heavily rumored for a MotoGP transition compared to others.
Alonso Lopez
In addition to being referred to by Quartararo, Lopez has also been openly acknowledged by the head of Yamaha.
Lin Jarvis, the managing director, was asked about the possibility of advancing Lopez from Moto2 to the newly formed Pramac team.
"I don't know," he told Sky Italia.
"A few years back, we mentioned that he is a cyclist who caught our attention."
"We are monitoring his progress, and when the appropriate moment arrives for him to advance to the top tier, we can consider it."
"We have recently finalized the agreement with Pramac, and now our focus shifts to the young Moto2 riders for future prospects."
"However, I'm uncertain whether now is the appropriate moment to take them."
Lopez, who is 22 years old, is presently in fifth place in the Moto2 rankings.
Ai Ogura
For many years, there have been discussions about Ai Ogura potentially advancing to a position in a Honda MotoGP team.
According to a report by Autosport, he is now poised to unexpectedly sign with Trackhouse Aprilia for MotoGP next year.
It would involve ending the relationship with Honda.
A few weeks back in Assen, analysts from TNT Sports covering MotoGP hinted that Ogura might be reluctant to join MotoGP if it meant riding a problematic Honda.
Neil Hodgson stated, "He was very firm about it. I pushed him on the matter, but he insisted, 'I won't leave unless I secure the Moto2 championship.'"
Sylvain Guintoli commented, "He will eventually have the chance to race. It's more advantageous to remain in Moto2 and secure the championship title."
Hodgson mentioned that he assumes the person is anticipating that by delaying for a year, the motorcycle might get better.
Guintoli: "Or maybe two years for a rule update. However, that's quite a lengthy period."
It appears that Ogura will unexpectedly join a satellite Aprilia team.
Joe Roberts, an American, is rumored to join Trackhouse Aprilia in 2025.
However, that chance will disappear if they decide to sign Ogura.
This year, Trackhouse's rebranding has positioned them as the sole MotoGP team owned by Americans.
To expand their influence, they may have considered bringing in a prominent American expert.
At Assen, Roberts' manager John Hopkins mentioned, "We are currently in discussions with a few teams."
"A few teams have shown interest in Joe."
"There was one instance, during lunch on Friday, that turned out very successfully."
Trackhouse's team principal, Davide Brivio, emphasized that their main focus is to renew the contracts of Raul Fernandez and Miguel Oliveira.
Fernandez has a contract extending to 2025, while Oliveira is reportedly set to transfer to Pramac Yamaha, as per Sky Italia.
Brivio mentioned considering Roberts as an alternative option, stating, "If we are unable to reach a satisfactory agreement with Miguel, we might have to consider other riders as Plan B or Plan C."
“It’s common knowledge that the situation in the market is fairly transparent. There is only one seasoned rider up for grabs; otherwise, teams will need to consider a newcomer.”
Earlier this week, Roberts participated in a track day event at Laguna Seca, where he rode alongside Aprilia's ambassador, Max Biaggi.
Following the announcement on Friday that Ogura would be joining Trackhouse, it appears that Roberts will not be considered for MotoGP in 2025.
Tony Arbolino
Despite experiencing a challenging season in Moto2, Tony Arbolino's name continues to surface in discussions about a potential move to MotoGP.
Last year, he secured the runner-up position in Moto2, but now he finds himself struggling in 13th place.
According to Sky Italia, Miguel Oliveira is expected to move from Trackhouse Aprilia to Pramac Yamaha. They also emphasize that Arbolino is a potential candidate to team up with Oliveira.
According to a report by Sky, he "might have a shot" if he performs well in the upcoming rounds, despite many of his Moto2 competitors having a stronger season overall.
Celestino Vietti
The primary opportunity for Celestino Vietti seems to be advancing to the VR46 MotoGP team.
As a graduate of the VR46 Academy, his presence is significant, and Valentino Rossi’s top-tier team will likely aim to keep representation from the academy in the coming year.
Following the departure of Luca Marini this year, they are set to lose Marco Bezzecchi to Aprilia in 2025.
It is anticipated that VR46 will retain Fabio di Giannantonio, who may ride on factory-spec equipment.
The position alongside Di Giannantonio might be available, and Vietti could be in the running for it.
The issue for Vietti? Franco Morbidelli is also searching for a new MotoGP seat for the upcoming year and, like Vietti, he is a follower of the VR46 academy.
Fermin Aldeguer
It's confirmed that Aldeguer will be a newcomer in MotoGP next season.
He has entered into an agreement with Ducati, but it remains uncertain which team he will join.
When Aldeguer signed his contract with Ducati, he candidly discussed his plans to become part of Pramac, riding a bike with factory specifications.
However, Pramac has moved to Yamaha, which means Aldeguer will need to be assigned to either VR46 or Gresini.
Gresini seems to be the more probable destination, with Alex Marquez as a potential teammate.
Aldeguer’s manager, Hector Faubel, stated to Mundo Deportivo that according to the contract, Aldeguer has the option to ride either a Desmosedici GP24 or GP25 in the first year. The final decision will be made by Ducati.
"In his second year, he will definitely choose the GP26."
Nineteen-year-old Aldeguer is presently ranked fourth in the Moto2 championship.
