Last-Chance Leap: Moto2 Contenders Eye Coveted MotoGP Seats for 2025
Which Moto2 competitors might secure a last-minute MotoGP spot for the upcoming season?
Promising athletes from Moto2 are contenders for a MotoGP ride in 2025.
Numerous Moto2 competitors remain contenders for one of the eight available MotoGP seats for the upcoming season.
The roster for MotoGP riders in 2025 is nearly finalized, yet a few key choices remain pending.
This collection of skilled Moto2 competitors might be favored over their more seasoned counterparts…
Sergio Garcia, who is presently leading the Moto2 championship, is being considered as a potential candidate for Pramac Yamaha.
Now 21 years old, he secured the 15th spot in his debut Moto2 season last year. However, this season, he has truly excelled.
Fabio Quartararo commented on Yamaha's latest satellite squad, stating, "In my opinion, [Sergio] Garcia and [Alonso] Lopez are among the quickest competitors in Moto2.
"I believe they have the potential to secure a spot in a squad like Pramac, which ultimately won't just be considered a satellite team, but rather an extension of a factory team."
Despite being at the forefront during the summer hiatus, Garcia's potential transition to MotoGP hasn't been as heavily rumored as it has for some of his peers.
Alonso Lopez
In addition to receiving acknowledgment from Quartararo, Lopez has also received a shout-out from the head of Yamaha.
Chief Executive Lin Jarvis was questioned regarding the decision to elevate Lopez from the Moto2 category to the newly established Pramac team.
"Who can say," he replied to Sky Italia.
A few years back, we mentioned our interest in him as a rider.
"We're keeping an eye on his professional journey, and when the appropriate moment arrives for him to advance to the top tier, we can consider it."
"We've recently finalized an agreement with Pramac, and our focus is now on nurturing young talent from the Moto2 category for the future."
"However, I'm unsure whether now is the appropriate moment to proceed with them."
Lopez, who is 22 years old, currently holds the fifth position in the Moto2 rankings.
For some time now, Ai Ogura has been rumored to be in line for a promotion to a Honda MotoGP position.
However, he is reportedly on the verge of surprisingly joining Trackhouse Aprilia in MotoGP for the upcoming season, according to Autosport.
This would entail cutting connections with Honda.
Several weeks back in Assen, commentators from TNT Sports implied during a MotoGP discussion that Ogura could be hesitant to join MotoGP riding a Honda that's not performing well.
"Neil Hodgson revealed, 'He was unyielding. When I challenged him, his response was clear: ‘I will not leave unless I secure the Moto2 championship’.”
Sylvain Guintoli remarked, “The opportunity to ride will come to him eventually. It's preferable to remain in Moto2 and secure the championship victory.”
Hodgson mentioned, "I suppose he's optimistic that by delaying for another year, there's a possibility of enhancing the motorcycle."
Guintoli remarked, "Or perhaps a few years for a modification in regulations. However, that seems like quite a lengthy period."
Now, it appears Ogura is unexpectedly set to join the satellite Aprilia team.
Joe Roberts
There are strong rumors connecting American rider Joe Roberts with a move to Trackhouse Aprilia in 2025.
However, that chance will disappear should they proceed to sign Ogura.
This year's makeover of Trackhouse has positioned them as the sole MotoGP team under American ownership.
They may have sought to expand their influence by pursuing a prominent talent from the United States.
John Hopkins, the manager of Roberts, mentioned in Assen, "Currently, we are in discussions with a few teams."
Several teams have shown interest in Joe.
"Specifically, one during lunchtime on Friday, which was remarkably successful."
Trackhouse team leader Davide Brivio emphasized that the top focus for Trackhouse was to secure new contracts with Raul Fernandez and Miguel Oliveira.
Fernandez has secured a contract through 2025, while Oliveira is set to move to Pramac Yamaha, as reported by Sky Italia.
Brivio mentioned considering Roberts as an alternative option, stating, "He might serve as a secondary or even tertiary choice, as we explore possibilities with other racers in the event of not reaching a satisfactory deal with Miguel."
"It's widely understood that the options on the market are straightforward. You have the choice of a single experienced rider, or you're left considering newcomers."
This past week, Roberts participated in a track day at Laguna Seca, where he had the opportunity to ride with Aprilia ambassador Max Biaggi.
However, following the announcement on Friday that Ogura has signed with Trackhouse, it appears Roberts will not be considered for MotoGP in 2025.
Tony Arbolino's current Moto2 season has been mostly disappointing, but rumors of a transition to MotoGP continue to circulate around him.
Last year, he secured the runner-up position in Moto2, but this year, he's fallen to 13th place
Sky Italia has disclosed that Miguel Oliveira is set to move from Trackhouse Aprilia to Pramac Yamaha, and they assert that Arbolino is being considered as a potential addition alongside Oliveira.
According to Sky, he might stand a chance if he shines in the upcoming races, despite the fact that numerous competitors in Moto2 are outperforming him this season.
Celestino Vietti's sole potential path forward seems to be a promotion to the VR46 MotoGP team.
He emerged from the VR46 Academy, and Valentino Rossi's top-tier team aims to keep a representative from the academy on board for the upcoming year.
Following Luca Marini's departure this year, they will also part ways with Marco Bezzecchi, who is set to join Aprilia in 2025.
It is anticipated that VR46 will retain Fabio di Giannantonio, potentially equipping him with factory-level bikes.
The spot beside Di Giannantonio might become available, and Vietti could potentially compete for it.
Vietti faces a challenge, as Franco Morbidelli, who is also a protégé of VR46, is in search of a MotoGP ride for the upcoming season.
Fermin Aldeguer
It is confirmed that Aldeguer will make his debut as a newcomer in MotoGP the following season.
He has inked a deal with Ducati, though it remains uncertain which squad he will join.
Upon signing his agreement with Ducati, Aldeguer publicly discussed his move to Pramac, emphasizing that he would be riding a bike with factory specifications.
However, Pramac's move to Yamaha implies that Aldeguer will need to find a spot with either VR46 or Gresini.
Gresini seems to be the more probable destination for Alex Marquez.
Hector Faubel, who manages Aldeguer, informed Mundo Deportivo that according to the agreement, in the initial year, he has the option to pilot either a Desmosedici GP24 or GP25, with the final decision resting with Ducati.
"In his second year, he is determined to opt for the GP26 regardless of the circumstances."
Aldeguer, who is 19 years old, currently holds the fourth position in the Moto2 rankings.
