Lando Norris Seizes US GP Pole Amidst Russell’s Crash and Verstappen’s Setback
Lando Norris secures pole position for the United States Grand Prix after George Russell's crash affects Max Verstappen's qualifying performance. Norris edges out his championship competitor Verstappen for the top spot.
Lando Norris responded by outperforming his F1 championship competitor Max Verstappen to secure the pole position at the United States Grand Prix.
Following a two-point setback to the championship frontrunner in the sprint race, Norris set himself up for a strong comeback in Sunday's grand prix. He achieved this by delivering an impressive lap, narrowly edging out Verstappen by a mere 0.031 seconds to secure his sixth pole position of the 2024 season.

Max Verstappen was on track for a faster final lap after recording the quickest time in the first sector. However, his opportunity to possibly secure pole position was thwarted when George Russell collided with his Mercedes at Turn 19. This incident compelled the Red Bull driver to reduce his speed due to the appearance of yellow flags.
"It was an excellent lap," Norris remarked. "I couldn't have gone much faster than I did. When you complete a lap and feel it will be challenging to surpass… I gave it my all because it was necessary."
"We didn't match the speed of the Ferraris or Red Bulls, so I had to try something different, and I managed to do that. It was an excellent lap, and I can confidently say it was likely the best of my career."
Carlos Sainz from Ferrari secured the third-fastest time, finishing just ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc. Oscar Piastri, driving the other McLaren, was more than six-tenths behind his teammate and placed fifth.
Before his crash, Russell managed to secure a lap time that placed him in sixth position. However, his Mercedes teammate, Lewis Hamilton, faced a surprising early exit in Q1, marking his poorest qualifying result at the Circuit of the Americas, which landed him in 18th place on the starting grid.
Pierre Gasly secured the seventh spot for Alpine, while Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin came in eighth. Kevin Magnussen from Haas finished ninth, and Sergio Perez of Red Bull ended up in tenth place after his quickest lap was disqualified for breaching track limits.
Yuki Tsunoda from RB finished in 11th place, just missing the top-10 qualification round, placing ahead of Nico Hulkenberg in his Haas. Esteban Ocon from Alpine secured the 13th spot, and Lance Stroll from Aston Martin ended up in 14th.
Following his performance with the third-quickest lap in the first qualifying session, Liam Lawson, who has rejoined the RB team, chose not to participate in the second session. He made this decision because he is already set to begin Sunday's grand prix from the last position due to an engine penalty.
Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto, driving for Williams, secured the 16th and 17th positions. Meanwhile, Valtteri Bottas managed to qualify ahead of his ex-Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, with Zhou Guanyu, Bottas's teammate at Sauber, finishing last in 20th place.
