Lando Norris Breaks Pole Position Curse with Dominant Victory at Singapore Grand Prix
Lando Norris breaks concerning F1 sequence at Singapore Grand Prix
At the Singapore Grand Prix, Lando Norris put a stop to his pattern of relinquishing the lead in the first lap of F1 races.
Lando Norris successfully broke his pattern of relinquishing the lead in the initial lap of F1 races whenever he started from pole position.
The driver from McLaren transformed their leading start position at the Marina Bay Street Circuit into a commanding win.
Crucially, Norris took the forefront in the series of initial turns, maintaining his position at the head of the pack, surpassing his Formula 1 championship competitor Max Verstappen.
Before Singapore, Norris had secured the pole position seven times, but in each instance, he had relinquished the lead by the conclusion of the first lap.
This is relevant to five competitions since 2021, including two short-distance races.
Norris was overtaken by Carlos Sainz at the beginning of the 2021 Russian Grand Prix, a race that was seemingly his to win.
In both the previous year's sprint race in Brazil and the sprint event in China, Lewis Hamilton took the lead following a bold overtaking maneuver in the initial series of turns.
Norris fell to third place in Spain despite starting in the pole position, as his teammate Oscar Piastri took the lead entering the first turn at the Hungaroring.
Norris was overtaken by Verstappen at Zandvoort, and subsequently, Piastri surpassed him in the opening lap of the Italian Grand Prix.
Norris has ultimately maintained his position at the forefront in Singapore, marking the conclusion of this trend.
Norris triumphed in the race, finishing more than 20 seconds ahead and cutting Verstappen's lead in the championship to 52 points.
After the race, Norris commented, "The race was incredible. There were several moments that were too close for comfort.
"Actually, there were a few brief instances where things got a bit tricky, but overall, I managed pretty well. The car was fantastic, allowing me to really go for it."
"We maintained a rapid pace throughout the entire race, and towards the end, I was able to relax a bit. It was a pleasant experience, though still challenging. I'm somewhat breathless, but overall, it was an enjoyable event."
