Lando Norris Breaks Opening Lap Jinx to Secure Dominant Victory at Singapore Grand Prix
Lando Norris breaks concerning trend at Singapore Grand Prix
Lando Norris put an end to his pattern of losing the lead on the first lap of Formula 1 races during the Singapore Grand Prix.
Lando Norris broke his habit of losing the lead at the start of Formula 1 races when beginning from pole position.
The McLaren racer turned his pole position at the Marina Bay Street Circuit into a commanding win.
Crucially, Norris maintained his position at the front through the initial corners, staying ahead of his F1 championship competitor, Max Verstappen.
Before the race in Singapore, Norris had started from pole position seven times, but on each of those occasions, he had lost the lead by the end of the first lap.
This pertains to five races from 2021 onward and two sprint events.
At the beginning of the 2021 Russian Grand Prix, Norris was overtaken by Carlos Sainz and lost his leading position, in a race that the British driver was expected to win.
The situation mirrored the Brazil sprint race from the previous year, as well as the sprint event in China, where Lewis Hamilton took the lead following a bold maneuver in the initial corners.
Norris, who began the race in Spain from pole position, fell to third place, while his teammate Oscar Piastri managed to take the lead at Turn 1 during the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Norris surrendered his lead to Verstappen at the Zandvoort race, and was subsequently outperformed by Piastri on the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix.
The trend has concluded as Norris maintained his lead in Singapore.
Norris clinched victory in the race with a margin of more than 20 seconds, narrowing Verstappen’s lead in the championship to 52 points.
In a post-race interview, Norris described the event as incredible but mentioned that there were several near-misses.
"I did experience a few minor issues during the middle, but overall I believe it was well-managed. The car performed exceptionally, allowing me to drive aggressively."
"We maintained a fast pace throughout the entire race, and by the end, I was able to relax. It was an enjoyable race, though challenging. I'm slightly winded, but it was a lot of fun."
