Lando Norris Breaks First-Lap Jinx to Claim Stunning Victory at Singapore GP
Lando Norris breaks his troubling F1 trend at the Singapore Grand Prix
At the Singapore Grand Prix, Lando Norris put an end to his pattern of losing the lead during the first lap of F1 races.
Lando Norris has at last broken his pattern of relinquishing the lead at the start of Formula 1 races when beginning from pole position.
The McLaren racer turned his pole position start at the Marina Bay Street Circuit into a commanding win.
Crucially, Norris maintained the front position through the initial series of turns, staying ahead of his F1 championship competitor Max Verstappen.
Before the race in Singapore, Norris had started from pole position seven times in the past but had failed to maintain his lead by the end of the first lap on each of those occasions.
This pertains to five races since 2021 and two sprint events.
At the beginning of the 2021 Russian Grand Prix, Norris ceded his lead to Carlos Sainz. Despite this setback, the British driver was expected to secure victory in the race.
This scenario mirrored last year's Brazil sprint event and the sprint in China, where Lewis Hamilton took the lead following a bold maneuver in the initial corners.
Norris, who began the race from pole position, fell to third place in Spain, as his teammate Oscar Piastri moved into the lead at Turn 1 of the Hungaroring.
Norris surrendered the lead to Verstappen at the Zandvoort race, and then Piastri outperformed him once more on the first lap of the Italian Grand Prix.
This pattern concluded with Norris maintaining his position at the front in Singapore.
Norris clinched victory in the race with a margin of more than 20 seconds, narrowing Verstappen’s lead in the championship to 52 points.
During his post-race interview, Norris remarked, "The race was incredible, although there were a few moments that were a bit too close for comfort."
"I had a few minor issues along the way, but overall it was well-managed. The car performed exceptionally, allowing me to drive aggressively."
"We were going full speed for the entire race, and by the end, I was able to relax. It was a great race, although challenging. I'm a little winded, but it was very enjoyable."
