KTM Faces Setback at Austrian MotoGP: Ducati Dominance Highlights Development Challenges
KTM "must feel let down" by their showing at the Austrian MotoGP
Following a successful double podium finish at their home race in 2023, KTM had to settle for a fifth-place finish at last weekend's Austrian MotoGP.
During the 2023 Austrian MotoGP weekend, Brad Binder secured second place finishes in both the Sprint and main races. As a result, there were elevated expectations for KTM's home race in 2024.
This year, KTM came to the Red Bull Ring after conducting tests at the Spielberg circuit over the summer break with both Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargaro.
Despite its efforts, the RC16 couldn't keep up with the Ducati Desmosedici during a race. This was evident in 2023 when Marc Marquez, riding the latest version of the Bologna bike, dropped to 14th place at the start but managed to finish in fourth.
"They must be feeling let down overall," Alex Lowes mentioned to TNT Sports. "This is their home turf, where they've conducted numerous tests, yet Ducati was noticeably ahead."
Former MotoGP rider and current TNT commentator Michael Laverty believes that the Desmosedici's performance is affecting Binder's mindset. Despite beginning the race in 12th place, Binder finished as the top KTM rider on Sunday.
“Binder is a competitor, and it’s somewhat discouraging for everyone when they observe the power of the Ducati GP24,” Laverty commented.
"One thing is certain about KTM: they have a winning mindset. They don't see the current gap as a setback; instead, they focus on strategies to narrow it and prepare for success in 2025."
"Be it aerodynamics or engine development, they will be focusing on each individual element."
According to Laverty, it’s crucial for KTM to make the necessary enhancements to compete with Ducati.
"Ducati doesn't have a lot of room for improvement," he remarked. "They always manage to make some progress, of course, but KTM has the financial resources and expertise; it just requires time."
"They are still quite new to the MotoGP championship, having not yet reached the 10-year mark as a factory team, and they continue to make progress consistently."
"Ducati is in its 22nd season in this championship. After experiencing a significant period of decline, they've worked hard to reach their current standing, and they truly deserve to enjoy their success now."
