On Monday, as parliament reconvenes after the summer break, Mr. Cleverly is set to deliver a speech emphasizing that his party needs to "embrace traditional Conservative principles" and make the case for reducing the size of government.
He will assert that the Conservatives "need to unify" to offer solutions for "a turbulent global landscape, worldwide migration, and a growing distrust in capitalism."
"This implies acknowledging the true capabilities and limitations of government intervention. It involves understanding what the state should and can effectively manage, as well as recognizing what it should steer clear of and is unable to handle. He will further state that the government ought to concentrate on excelling in a limited number of areas rather than mediocrely addressing a broad spectrum," he will add.
"We acknowledge that the foremost responsibility of the government is to safeguard its citizens and its territorial integrity. However, it is crucial for Conservatives to be transparent about the compromises involved in executing these duties effectively."
