Jorge Martin’s Struggles and Triumphs: Battling Braking Issues and Thumb Injury to Secure Four Consecutive Second-Place Finishes in MotoGP
"It feels odd to brake and constantly sense an impending crash," said Jorge Martin. Martin secured his fourth consecutive second-place finish at the Austrian MotoGP, resulting in the loss of his championship lead to Pecco Bagnaia.
In today's Austrian Grand Prix, Jorge Martin, who had just reclaimed the championship lead at Silverstone, lost his top spot after finishing second to Francesco Bagnaia.
Since the summer break ended with the British Grand Prix two weeks ago, Martin has secured second place in both the Sprint races and the main Grands Prix.
After the Austrian Grand Prix, Martin expressed his frustration at the post-race press conference, saying, "I'm somewhat annoyed because I felt I could have won today. Pecco [Bagnaia] appears to be performing slightly better right now. I believe I raced well and had a strong start, but once I was in second place, I think I lost nearly all my chances of winning."
"In general, I performed well in the race. Towards the end, I maintained a strong speed, which was significantly better than the others. It appears that Pecco and I are currently leading the pack."
"Scored more points, finishing second four times consecutively, so I hope to achieve a better result next time. […] What matters most is that I give my all, so let's head to Aragon and make another attempt."
A notable event over the weekend involved Martin injuring his left thumb on Friday night. Following the Sprint, he mentioned that the injury mainly affected him at the beginning, but didn't hinder his performance while riding. Despite taking the lead at the start of the Grand Prix, Martin did not blame his thumb injury for his inability to compete with Bagnaia towards the end of the race.
“Yesterday, I mentioned that my thumb was fine, and today it’s still not a problem,” Martin stated. “It’s starting to get a little inflamed now, but it didn’t affect my performance while riding.”
Martin had to cope with a thumb injury specifically during this weekend's event in Austria. However, front tire locking during braking is an issue he's been managing for several years, despite it being more pronounced in Austria.
Martin stated, "Indeed, we've been experiencing significant front-end locking issues with Ducati for the past three seasons, so it's not a new problem. We're somewhat accustomed to it. However, it's slightly more problematic here, especially with the high temperatures."
"When there is increased transfer to the front, we experience slightly less, so it's crucial to find the right balance. However, this issue won't completely go away, so I deal with it by riding with this locking mechanism."
Martin mentioned that the locking issue intensified while he was racing in Bagnaia's slipstream.
"I experienced a lot over the weekend," he mentioned, "and trailing behind Pecco during the race made it even more challenging as everything heated up significantly."
"It's a bit unusual to apply the brakes and constantly feel like you're on the verge of an accident, but we manage it."
