Jorge Martin Weighs In on Pecco Bagnaia-Alex Marquez Aragon MotoGP Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved following the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, where he maintained his remarkable consistency, and Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon just five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings. This gap was due to Bagnaia's victories in both the Sprint race and the Grand Prix in Austria.
Bagnaia had a tough weekend in terms of scoring points, while Martin continued his streak of second-place finishes, securing the runner-up spot in both races this weekend, making it six consecutive second-place finishes since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a slow beginning, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and reached Marquez's back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at the 12th turn. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, but both riders collided and crashed at the 13th turn.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to take a definitive stance.
"It's challenging," Martin mentioned. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Undoubtedly, it's hard to see due to the significant amount of dust in that area. I believe this prevented Alex from leaning more, similar to the incident with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed during the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this resulted in a collision."
"I really hope they're all right since it looked like they were near the bikes after the accident. I wish them well for the upcoming race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed that no bones were fractured. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming race of the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia competed in this event with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have just one week to recover after the Aragon round to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two victories in the MotoGP class at Misano, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spaniard heads into his rival's home round with a 23-point lead in the championship.
