Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash at Aragon MotoGP, Eyes Championship Lead Ahead of San Marino
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP.
At the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved significantly due to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia's hopes took a hit after he crashed.
Martin came to Aragon five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing in second place in every race since the summer break, securing two more second-place finishes this past weekend.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a rough beginning, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and caught up to Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off at turn 12, and as Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to fully commit to any particular stance.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see clearly due to the amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, resulting in contact."
"I hope they're alright since they appeared to be near the bikes after the accident. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury following an accident at the Catalan Grand Prix, and this year he will once again have a one-week recovery period after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spaniard heads into his rival's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
