Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash at Aragon MotoGP, Eyes Championship Lead Ahead of Misano
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia's crash hindered his own prospects.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Although Bagnaia didn't score many points over the weekend, Martin also had a less-than-stellar performance, securing second place in both races, continuing his streak of finishing second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend concluded with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. After a disappointing start, Bagnaia was making his way through the pack and reached Marquez's back wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to ask Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Certainly, it's hard to observe clearly since there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex wasn't able to lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
"I hope they're alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash, so I wish them well for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no bone fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia competed with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix and faced a similar one-week recovery period between the Aragon and Misano races.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, Martin emerged victorious in both 2023 races. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
