Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Collision: Championship Prospects Shift After Aragon MotoGP Drama
Jorge Martin shares his thoughts on the collision between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend as he maintained his remarkable performance, whereas Francesco Bagnaia suffered a fall.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings. This gap followed Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two more second-place finishes, making it six consecutive runner-up spots since the summer break.
Bagnaia's race weekend culminated in a late collision with Alex Marquez. Despite a disappointing start, Bagnaia made his way up through the pack, reaching Marquez's back wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez went off the racing line at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, but the two riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to firmly take a side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You should inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Indeed, it's hard to observe clearly due to the significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't tilt further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 (Roberts had an accident on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez), and ultimately, they made contact."
"I hope they're alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center. Scans revealed that no bones were fractured. However, the Italian rider mentioned that he was experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia competed in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he'll again have just one week to recuperate after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category previously, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads to his competitor's home ground with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
