Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Collision at Aragon MotoGP, Eyes Championship Lead
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the accident between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's hopes for the championship received a significant lift during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin reached Aragon with a five-point deficit in the World Championship standings behind Bagnaia, who had previously won both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two more second-place finishes, continuing his streak of placing second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia’s weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia fought his way through the pack and closed in on Marquez’s rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though it was evident that he was hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to question Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see due to the significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn’t tilt further, similar to the incident with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed during the final lap while competing against his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
"I really hope they’re alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I’m wishing they’re good to go for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no bone fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming weekend will see the San Marino Grand Prix, the next event in the MotoGP World Championship, taking place at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury he sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have only one week to recover from the Aragon race before competing at Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous victories in Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who secured both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider leads the championship by 23 points as they head into his competitor's home race.
