Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Collision at Aragon MotoGP: Championship Lead Shifts Ahead of San Marino
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved significantly during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, as he maintained his remarkable consistency, whereas Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing second, securing that position in both races over the weekend. Martin has now placed second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend concluded with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Despite a rough beginning, Bagnaia was making his way through the pack and reached Marquez’s back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at the 12th turn. When Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at the 13th turn.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he seemed hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You should consult Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see clearly because there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2. Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, and ultimately, there was contact."
"I really hope they are alright. After the crash, they appeared to be near the bikes, so I’m wishing they’re in good shape for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical facility where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the upcoming round of the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have a one-week recovery period following the Aragon round to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous victories at Misano in the MotoGP class, it was Martin who claimed victory in both 2023 races. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor's home race with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
