Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Collision as Championship Race Heats Up After Aragon MotoGP
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP, an incident involving his championship competitor.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia's hopes took a hit after he crashed.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a tough weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his consistent performance with two second-place finishes, making it six consecutive races where he's secured second since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend was capped off by a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a rough start, Bagnaia made his way up through the pack and found himself close behind Marquez with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, the two riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly support any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You should inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"It was definitely hard to see due to the amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the last lap while competing against his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was contact."
"I really hope they're alright, as it looked like they were near the bikes following the crash. I wish them a speedy recovery so they can participate in the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming event in the MotoGP World Championship is the San Marino Grand Prix, scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, racer Bagnaia participated with a leg injury sustained from a crash in the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have a one-week recovery period following the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
While Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads to his competitor's home circuit with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
