Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash; Eyes Championship Lead Ahead of Misano Showdown
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's hopes for the championship received a significant lift during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing remarkable performance, while Francesco Bagnaia's race ended in a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured second place in both races, continuing his streak of finishing second in all six races since the summer break.
In the final moments of the race, Bagnaia's weekend took a turn when he encountered an incident involving Alex Marquez. Despite having a slow beginning, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and reached Marquez's back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez went off the track at turn 12. Seizing the opportunity, Bagnaia attempted to pass, but both riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was visibly hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's not easy," Martin commented. "You should talk to Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Without a doubt, it was hard to see due to the significant amount of dust in that area. I believe that Alex wasn't able to lean further, similar to Joe Roberts' situation in Moto2 when Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, which ultimately led to a collision."
"I really hope they're alright. After the crash, it looked like they were near the bikes, so I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center. Scans revealed that he did not have any broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, will take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spaniard carries a 23-point lead in the championship as he heads to his competitor's home circuit.
