Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash as Championship Race Heats Up
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved during the recent Aragon Grand Prix, thanks to his remarkable consistency, especially as Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon just five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, which coincided with Martin securing two more second-place finishes. Martin has consistently finished in second place in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish beginning, Bagnaia made his way up the ranks and, with seven laps remaining, found himself right behind Marquez.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly favor one side.
"It's challenging," Martin commented. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
“Undoubtedly, it’s hard to witness because there was also a lot of dust in that area, so I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2 (Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez), and ultimately, there was a collision.
"I hope they're alright since it looked like they were near the bikes after the collision. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury he sustained during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have just one week to recover from the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. The Spanish rider now heads into his opponent's home event with a 23-point advantage in the championship standings.
