Jorge Martin Weighs in on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin shares his perspective on the collision between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP, involving his championship competitor.
Jorge Martin’s hopes for the championship received a significant lift during last weekend’s Aragon Grand Prix, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin came to Aragon just five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings. This was after Bagnaia had secured wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak by securing second place in both races, making it six consecutive second-place finishes since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia managed to work his way up through the pack and found himself right behind Marquez with seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident. However, he was noticeably hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see clearly due to the amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't tilt further, similar to what Joe Roberts experienced in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Eventually, this led to a collision."
"I really hope they're alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash, so fingers crossed they're good to go for the next race."
Following the mishap, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the San Marino Grand Prix, part of the MotoGP World Championship, will take place at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia faced this race with a leg injury from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have only one week to recover from the Aragon race before competing at Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having two MotoGP victories at Misano, it was Martin who clinched both victories there in 2023. This year, the Spaniard heads into his rival's local race with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
