Jorge Martin Weighs In on Aragon MotoGP Collision: Implications for Championship Battle with Bagnaia
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP, an event that involved his championship competitor.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia did not have a strong weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two second-place finishes once again, continuing his streak of coming in second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Following a subpar start, Bagnaia was making his way up the pack and reached the back of Marquez's bike with seven laps remaining.
During lap 18, Marquez veered off course at turn 12, and when Bagnaia attempted to capitalize, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
Martin commented, "It's tough. You ought to speak with Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Certainly, it was hard to see due to the dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn’t lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this resulted in a collision."
"Fingers crossed they're alright, as it looked like they were near the bikes after the accident. I'm hoping they'll be ready for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans confirmed that no bones were fractured. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing discomfort in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race while nursing a leg injury he sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have just one week to recover after the Aragon Grand Prix in order to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia securing two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spanish rider carries a 23-point lead in the championship standings as he heads to his competitor's home track.
