Jorge Martin Shatters Lap Record to Clinch Pole Position at MotoGP Austria, Edging Out Bagnaia
MotoGP Austria: Martin Breaks Lap Record to Snatch Pole Position from Bagnaia in Qualifying
Jorge Martin established a new overall lap record to secure the top spot for the Austrian MotoGP.
Jorge Martin secured the top spot in the Austrian Grand Prix MotoGP qualifying session, surpassing Francesco Bagnaia for pole position.
Bagnaia was in the lead following the initial laps, making it appear as though he would secure pole position. However, his final lap time of 1:27.889 fell short, allowing Martin to clinch the pole with a time of 1:27.748.
Last year, Marco Bezzecchi set the lap record at 1:28.544. This weekend, Martin bettered that time by nearly 0.8 seconds.
Marc Marquez secured the final spot on the front row by clocking his fastest lap towards the end of the session. Initially, he trailed behind Bagnaia during the first run but ultimately fell short of matching Martin and Bagnaia's times in the 1:27 range.
Following a difficult Friday for Aprilia, qualifying brought better news as Aleix Espargaro secured a fourth-place start and Maverick Vinales claimed sixth. Jack Miller, having advanced from Q1, will start in fifth on the top KTM, positioned between the two Aprilia riders.
Pol Espargaro moved forward alongside Miller from Q1 to Q2, resulting in Pedro Acosta's elimination. Consequently, the GasGas racer will commence the race in 14th position. Miguel Oliveira secured third place in Q1, narrowly missing out on Q2 despite matching Espargaro's top time, as Espargaro's second-best lap was superior to Oliveira's.
During the second qualifying session (Q2), Espargaro secured the 10th spot despite a crash at turn three on his last attempt. Brad Binder ended up at the bottom of the Q2 standings in 12th place, trailing more than a second behind Martin's pole position time. The third row will be entirely occupied by Ducati riders, with Enea Bastianini in seventh, Franco Morbidelli in eighth, and Marco Bezzecchi in ninth.
