Jorge Martin Reflects on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash at Aragon MotoGP as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor, Pecco Bagnaia, and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend as he maintained his impressive form, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin entered Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing second in every race since the summer break, adding two more second-place finishes to his record this weekend.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. After initially struggling, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and caught up to Marquez's rear wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, but both riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the press conference after the race, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly support any particular side.
Martin commented that it was challenging and suggested that Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez should be consulted.
"Certainly, it was hard to see due to the dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while contending with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was contact."
"I really hope they're alright because after the accident, they seemed to be near the motorcycles. I wish them well for the upcoming race."
Following the accident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming event in the MotoGP World Championship is the San Marino Grand Prix, scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia participated in the race with a leg injury he sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have only a one-week recovery period following the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories in Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor's home race with a 23-point lead in the championship.
