Jorge Martin Overcomes Bizarre Injury to Snatch Austrian MotoGP Pole from Francesco Bagnaia
Jorge Martin received stitches following an unusual injury that occurred as he was getting out of the shower. Despite sustaining a strange hand injury overnight, Martin managed to secure the pole position for the Austrian MotoGP, surpassing Francesco Bagnaia.
In a surprising turn of events on Friday night, MotoGP title contender Jorge Martin managed to claim the top qualifying spot at the Red Bull Ring, edging out his main championship competitor Francesco Bagnaia.
The Pramac Ducati motorcyclist injured his left thumb on a metal object, seemingly as he was getting out of the shower.
“It was a tough morning!” Martin exclaimed. “I injured my thumb yesterday and hoped it would improve, but it was extremely painful when I woke up today.”
“They sewed me up, so at least I can ride. Although it bothers me a bit, riding isn’t a major issue.”
"Now, I'm feeling confident after setting this fantastic lap record. This track suits me well, and it's my third pole position here, so let's savor the moment."
A photo shared by Martin on social media revealed the severity of his injuries.
First Place! To everyone who's been asking, I cut my finger in my room yesterday and woke up today feeling worse than I expected. Thanks to the entire medical team 🫡 We'll give our all in the race! 😉 #AustrianGP🇦🇹 pic.twitter.com/XTVKKvZnQ7— Jorge Martín Almoguera (@88jorgemartin) August 17, 2024

Martin narrowly defeated practice leader Bagnaia, who was aiming for his third consecutive Red Bull Ring victory, by a margin of 0.141 seconds. Marc Marquez secured third place, trailing by over half a second.
The #89 car set a new record with a lap time of 1 minute and 27.748 seconds, breaking Bagnaia's previous record of 1 minute and 28.508 seconds set on Friday.
Bagnaia expressed his amazement at the day's achievements, noting that both he and Jorge had accomplished something fantastic and almost unbelievable. He celebrated his fastest lap as he crossed the finish line.
"I noticed that Jorge achieved a time of 27.7 seconds, but I was thrilled just to get below 28 seconds."
