Jorge Martin Claims Deserved Victory Despite Controversial Misano Finish: ‘No Room’ for Bastianini’s Last-Lap Overtake
Jorge Martin: Enea Bastianini “lacked space”; "no repercussions" for me in the future
Championship frontrunner shares his perspective on contentious conclusion at Misano
Jorge Martin believes he should have won the MotoGP Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, arguing that Enea Bastianini didn't have enough space to execute his contentious overtake on the final lap.
Throughout most of Sunday's 27-lap grand prix at Misano, Martin was in the lead but faced significant late challenges from Bastianini, who is also with the factory Ducati team.
On the final lap, Bastianini made a bold attempt to overtake Martin on the inside at Turn 4, resulting in contact between the two and causing Martin to veer significantly off course.
Martin crossed the finish line five seconds after Bastianini and was clearly upset as he rode past the chequered flag.
The officials chose not to look into the matter.
"Martin started by saying, 'I definitely believe it was a fantastic weekend.'"
"I was determined to win, and today I was the best competitor on the track in Misano during the second round."
"After numerous laps, I managed to improve from the previous weekend and achieve a much faster speed."
"However, I needed to handle the Enea situation, and I believe there wasn't an opportunity to execute that maneuver."
“Continuing the discussion is pointless since nothing will be altered by it.
"Undoubtedly, I believe I earned that win. If he was going to make a move, he should have done it cleanly and without making contact."
The Pramac rider thinks that a new standard has been established regarding racing conduct: "Certainly, I believe we now have a better understanding of the race direction's expectations moving forward. So, if I need to do something similar in the future, there should be no repercussions… at least, that's my hope."
Martin currently holds a 24-point lead in the championship after Francesco Bagnaia, who had started from pole position, fell from third place towards the end of the race.
He believes that, without any errors, he is ideally placed to secure the championship in the last five rounds.
"I'll make an effort to concentrate on the good things," he mentioned.
"The speed was intense and excellent. The beginning went well. I performed better in qualifying. There was some uncertainty in the previous race."
"I'm pleased with how things went. I feel confident about Indonesia; I really enjoy that circuit and look forward to being there."
"I’ll aim to concentrate on my cycling. As usual, there’s a lot of external chatter."
"At last, I have a slight edge. Let's work on strengthening it because I believe I am a bit more powerful, and as long as I don't make any errors, I can win this race."
