Jorge Martin Analyzes Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez’s Aragon MotoGP Crash Amid Championship Shake-Up
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances at the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing remarkable performance, whereas Francesco Bagnaia's hopes took a hit after he suffered a crash.
Martin reached Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, which coincided with Martin securing two more second-place finishes. Martin has consistently placed second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. After an unsteady beginning, Bagnaia began to make his way up the ranks and closed in on Marquez's rear wheel with just seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. When Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly favor one side over the other.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to consult Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see due to the amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was contact."
"I really hope they're alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the San Marino Grand Prix, the next event in the MotoGP World Championship. Bagnaia, who suffered a leg injury in the Catalan Grand Prix in 2023, faced a similar one-week recovery period after Aragon to prepare for this year's race at Misano.
Despite Bagnaia’s two victories at Misano in the MotoGP class, it was Martin who clinched both victories in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider enters his rival's home race with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
