Johann Zarco’s Aragon Triumph: Securing Honda’s First Q2 Spot of the 2024 MotoGP Season Amid Challenges
Johann Zarco exclaims, "That feels great, almost like a minor triumph!"
Johann Zarco achieves Honda's inaugural entry into Qualifying 2 for the 2024 MotoGP campaign.
Johann Zarco arguably delivered the standout performance of the day during Friday's MotoGP practice session at Aragon, despite Marc Marquez capturing most of the attention.
The LCR competitor secured Honda's first entry into Qualifying 2 of the season by achieving eighth position on the newly resurfaced and challenging circuit.
Zarco clocked a time just shy of one second behind Marquez on his Ducati. Meanwhile, the Repsol Honda riders, Luca Marini and Joan Mir, finished in 17th and 21st positions respectively, with their LCR colleague Takaaki Nakagami trailing the field in 22nd place.
"Awesome! It's like achieving an initial, minor win!" Zarco expressed to MotoGP.com. "We're now aware that in tomorrow's qualifying, I'll at least secure the 12th spot, marking my highest qualifying position of the year as well.
"Securing a spot in the top ten during practice brings us joy. We've introduced several updates to the bike, and I've noticed a significant enhancement with the new tires, a promising development. Especially considering that in Spielberg, during the time attack, I found myself in 17th place."
"It was aggravating. Hence, achieving enhanced performance from the new tire today was crucial and provided a sense of fulfillment."
Zarco attributed his improved tyre performance to a new engine, yet cautioned: "We haven't found a major solution yet, but it's important to have faith in the process and believe in Honda, trusting that this fresh insight will aid in the development of future enhancements."
Despite the challenges, car #5 is focused on achieving a top ten finish this weekend, aiming high for Sunday's race.
"He emphasized the chance we have at hand, expressing a strong desire not to let it slip away. Hence, he stressed the importance of continuing our efforts to secure points in the Sprint and aiming for a top ten finish in Sunday's race," he stated.
"Following that, we'll have the opportunity to revel in a robust weekend. It's crucial to stay grounded and prepare ourselves for the significant day ahead."
