Hong Kong’s NAMI Aims for Expansion into Greater Bay Area: Licensing Technology for Income Generation and R&D Advancements
The Institute for Advanced Materials in Hong Kong intends to broaden its research and development services to the Greater Bay Area. The non-profit organization perceives potential in licensing its technology as a source of revenue to finance new apparatus and facilities, according to CEO Fung.
The Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI), a government-supported organization dedicated to assisting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Hong Kong with research and development, intends to set up operations in the northern region to expand its services.
"Our long-term strategy includes synchronizing our growth with the Greater Bay Area. However, due to several factors, including the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, we have not yet been able to physically establish ourselves there," CEO Andy Fung stated on Monday. "Our goal is to establish our footprint there at the earliest opportunity."
The region includes nine municipalities in the southern part of Guangdong province, along with Hong Kong and Macau, where Beijing promotes further economic unification.
With the expansion of its partnership there, the charitable organization has the potential to capitalize on more chances to lease out its technology and generate revenue for purchasing new equipment, enlarging its infrastructure, and enhancing its workforce, stated Fung, who assumed the position of its CEO earlier this month.
This would likely be in anticipation of Hong Kong's commitment to establish an inter-regional science and technology center by the year 2035.
