Honda’s Struggles Continue: Confident Push for ‘Bigger Things’ in Second Half of 2024 MotoGP Season
Honda remains proactive with significant developments scheduled for testing in the latter half of the season. The company acknowledges that maintaining confidence is crucial, as lacking it would mean they should not continue.
Honda's poor performance in MotoGP over the past few seasons has persisted into 2024.
Joan Mir is ahead of the other three Honda riders in the championship standings, but the 2020 MotoGP champion sits in 18th place with a total of 13 points.
This season, none of the four Honda riders have managed to finish in the top ten, marking one of the most challenging periods in the brand's premier class history.
Commenting on the season's kickoff, Repsol Honda's head Alberto Puig shared with MotoGP.com: "It hasn't been straightforward. We're not at our desired performance level yet. While we're making efforts to improve, we still have a long way to go. We're currently in our usual spot."
"This is the current situation, and we are making efforts to keep up while exploring various solutions."
"However, the lap times clearly indicate that we haven't achieved our goal yet, and we are aware of this. We are making every effort to accomplish as much as we can in the shortest time frame possible."
"We're taking advantage of the allowances and conducting numerous tests, but significant progress is still needed."
Acknowledging the evident, Puig confessed that progress is necessary moving ahead.
"We need to enhance the bicycle. That is the main issue. We are aware of what is lacking, but we have yet to come up with a solution to fix it."
"We are fully aware of our primary issues and comprehend them well. However, we are not entirely certain about the solutions."
This season, Honda added Luca Marini and Johann Zarco as new riders to their team.
The Japanese brand has benefited from his positive influence, which is evident from the speed he has demonstrated at times.
Marini, on the other hand, has faced challenges in adapting to the RC213V, but it's evident that his struggles are due to the bike itself.
Determined not to give up, Puig mentioned that Honda is putting in maximum effort to regain their dominance in MotoGP.
Puig stated, "We need to have confidence; otherwise, we might as well leave. We are certain about our actions."
"We are aware that we are awake. However, our attempts to change this, regardless of their success, are a different matter entirely."
"For the latter half of the year, our goal is to introduce new elements and ensure they function properly."
"However, we currently lack the guarantee. At the start of the year, we had already planned to experiment with different things in the second half."
"Not minor adjustments, but significant changes. We aim to take that leap forward and enhance our performance."
